Cake Roll: Just the Recipe

Recipe From my Great-Grandma Mae. Makes one cake.


  • 5 eggs
  • 5 Tablespoons cold water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup sifted flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla


  1. Preheat oven to 350℉.
  2. Line 10.5×15 inch pan with parchment paper.
  3. Separate egg whites from yolks.
  4. Combine the yolks and the water in the bowl of an electric mixer.
  5. Beat on high until peaks form. This will take 2-3 minutes.
  6. Add 1 cup of sugar to the egg yolks.
  7. Mix well.
  8. In a separate bowl, sift flour, baking powder, and salt together.
  9. Fold flour mixture into yolk mixture with a silicone spatula.
  10. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla.
  11. Beat egg whites on high until peaks form. This will take 1-2 minutes.
  12. Fold egg whites into the yolk and flour mixture.
  13. Spread batter evenly into prepared pan.
  14. Bake 25-30 minutes.
  15. Dust a tea towel with 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar.
  16. Turn warm cake onto tea towel, you may need to loosen the sides a bit.
  17. Remove parchment paper.
  18. Cut crusts off with bread knife.
  19. Lay new piece of parchment paper on cake.
  20. Starting with end furthest from you roll new piece of parchment into cake.
  21. Place cake on cooling rack until completely cool.
  22. Fill with icing, whipped cream, frosting, or jam.
  23. Cover with deluxe chocolate icing.
  24. Enjoy!
